YGGDRASIL

UIU Mars Rover AXIOS

The tree of life

YGGDRASIL is our 3rd Generation Mars Rover Prototype. The upgraded carbon fiber chassis, paired with newly optimized 3D-printed wheels, delivers optimal suspension and traction, enabling YGGDRASIL to navigate demanding terrain with precision and reliability.

Autonomous Sub-system

The rover navigates autonomously using an advanced system that clears obstacles, replans paths, and recovers from challenges. It combines data from a depth camera, GPS, and motion sensors for precise movement. With LiDAR and cameras, it detects and avoids obstacles in real time, including potholes. A smart object detection system identifies items from up to 16 meters away, while another system tracks special markers for navigation. A dashboard at the base station displays key mission updates, and all processing runs on a powerful Jetson AGX Orin, ensuring smooth and reliable performance in tough environments.

Science Sub-system

The system analyzes soil and atmospheric conditions to identify habitable sites. A Raman spectrometer selects the top two locations. The wet lab detects key biomolecules, while the science wrist enables contamination-free sampling. Soil sensors assess habitability, and a regolith collector gathers samples. A panorama camera surveys terrain, with all data integrated into a central dashboard for real-time monitoring.
